Description

Students' educational and placement experiences are at the heart of medical education. GLADD (The Association of LGBT Doctors and Dentists) and the GMC are keen to hear about the experiences of LGBT medical students in order to help drive positive change. To help us in this work, we would like to invite LGBT medical students to discuss their experiences at an interactive half-day event co-hosted by GLADD and the GMC.

GLADD works collaboratively with the GMC to help ensure that diversity is effectively considered in the development, implementation and monitoring of GMC standards and guidance. In January 2016, the GMC launched new standards for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; there are two themes running through the new standards that are particularly relevant for LGBT medical students, these are ‘equality & diversity’ and ‘building supportive environments’. The purpose of our joint event on 21 October is to improve our understanding of the contemporary experiences of LGBT medical students so that the work of both the GMC and GLADD is better informed as these standards are implemented and monitored. The event will include a facilitated discussion to explore your experiences with opportunities to make anonymous contributions and/or open comments.

We are aiming to secure representation from each of the UK medical schools, and therefore we are initially asking students to register their interest in this event using this Eventbrite page. Please note that registering your interest does not confirm a place at the event. GLADD will contact students to confirm their place at a later date. GLADD will provide the GMC with a list of the names of those students in attendance, but no additional personal identifiable data will be made available to the GMC.

There is no fee for the event. Bursaries to cover the cost of travel may be available, please contact students@gladd.co.uk for further information.
